Islamabad, June 01 : The two-day International Kashmir Seminar was inaugurated in Islamabad, today, with a strong message to the international community that it can no longer stay as a mute spectator towards the matchless struggle of the people of Kashmir to achieve their inalienable right to self-determination.
The seminar has been organized by the Mirpur University of Science and Technology (MUST). The speakers condemned the killing of civilians, house detentions and arrest of Hurriyet leaders and activists including Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik. They lauded the Kashmiris’ strong determination for the cause of freedom.
The speakers deliberated upon global dimensions of the Kashmir dispute and current Indian plans to suppress the Kashmir liberation movement. They strongly denounced the gross human rights violations perpetrated by Indian troops in occupied Kashmir.
The President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan, in his address while paying tributes to the Kashmiri martyrs said that the time had come to settle the Kashmir dispute for ensuring durable peace in South Asia.
PML-N Chairman, Raja Zafarul Haq said that Kashmir was not a territorial but an internationally-recognized dispute and stressed for settling it as per relevant resolutions of the United Nations.
Director of Kashmir Media Service, Sheikh Tajammul-ul-Islam, in his address said that India had stepped up its state terrorism in occupied Kashmir to crush the ongoing freedom movement. He pointed out that India was working on different plans including construction of separate townships for Kashmiri Pandits, colonies for Indian soldiers, settlements for homeless West Pakistani Refugees and providing land to Indian industrialists on long leases in the territory. All these moves, he added, are aimed at changing the demographic composition of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Syed Ali Gilani, addressed the seminar from Srinagar via video link. Others who spoke on the occasion included Hurriyet leaders, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi and Zafar Akbar Butt, Must Vice Chancellor, Dr Habibur Rehman, Dr Atia Anayatullah, Dr Muhammad Khan, Mushaal Malick, Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami AJk, Abdul Rashid Turabi, and Member European Parliament, Amjad Bashir.
The Mirpur University of Science and Technology conferred honorary degree of Doctorate of Letters to Syed Ali Gilani.
