Dr Susan Shariati And The Legacy Of Dr Ali Shariati
I was deeply moved to see the photograph of Dr Susan Shariati, an eminent scholar based in France. She is the daughter of the great Iranian thinker, Dr Ali Shariati
History tells us that when King Reza Shah Pahlavi exiled Dr Ali Shariati, he sought refuge in France.
Tragically, according to several sources, he was assassinated within a few months, allegedly with the collaboration of Iranian and British intelligence agencies.
Even his daughter, Dr Susan Ali Shariati was not spared. She was arrested, interrogated, and tortured in prison by “SAVAK” the Shah’s notorious secret police. Shame on that tyranny and on all who enabled it.
I have read the books of Dr Ali Shariati with great interest. He was profoundly influenced by the poetry and philosophy of Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal. His book on Iqbal is deeply thought-provoking.
Dr Ali Shariati was a liberal, rational, and progressive Muslim intellectual, committed to reason, justice, and social reform.
A few years ago, Dr Javed Iqbal , son of Allama Iqbal, and I were invited by the Government of Iran to an international conference on Jamal-ud-Din Afghani/Asadabadi. We were also hosted by the Islamic Centre in Tehran, the institution founded by Dr Ali Shariati. There, we addressed gatherings of scholars and intellectuals.

As a rationalist, moderate, and progressive voice, he was often opposed by hardline elements within the clergy. Yet his ideas continue to inspire new generations.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
